Franz Marc was a German artist interested in using color in new and exciting ways. His paintings are somewhat cubist in nature, but are realistic at the same time except for their bold and powerful use of color. He was part of the Expressionist movement of Pre- World War I Germany. In addition to his use of color to express emotion, he also believed that animals held great spirit, grace, and power. It was the combination of these that led to his pieces filled with vividly colored animals such as bright blue horses and yellow cows. Marc's career was a short one, as he was unfortunatley killed in action during World War I at the young age of 36.
